Location: Lunch at UNO Student Center

Presentation at: University of Nebraska at Omaha Information Technology Services

Our Hosts will be:

Andrew Buker - UNO Systems Administrator II / ITS Data Center Manager

Parking:

The University of Nebraska at Omaha provides remote parking from the Crossroads Mall Parking Structure, located at 72nd and Cass Street (one block north of Dodge St).  There is metered parking for visitors on campus, but it is extremely limited.  Due to the number of people, the best option is to park at Crossroads Mall and take the shuttle.  Meet at Crossroad Mall Parking Garage at 11:20 PM. Park on levels 1, 3, 5 or 6.  A shuttle to UNO leaves the Parking Garage every 15 minutes.  If you miss the shuttle, another one will come shortly.  The shuttle will drop you off just outside the Milo Bail Student Center (Student Center).

Lunch:

Lunch will be at the Maverick Buffet on second floor of the Student Center We will reserve several tables inside the buffet area, you have to pay to get in The buffet lunch costs $6.95 (plus tax etc.?) The Maverick Buffet is adjacent to the food court.

View lunch menu, updated daily: http://mbsc.unomaha.edu/foodcourt.php

Presentation:

After lunch, the presentation will be in the Eppley Administration Building (EAB) just east from the Student Center.  Come in the north side of the EAB, turn right and find the elevator, take the elevator down to the basement floor, take a left off the elevator, and it is the last room on the RIGHT before the hallway turns right.  The room is called the ITS Conference Room # EAB013C.

Tour:

After the presentation, UNO Staff will provide a tour of their newly remodeled ITS Data Center and explain how they use VMware at their facility.

What is VMware Virtualization?

Virtualization essentially lets one computer do the job of multiple computers, by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments.  Virtual servers and virtual desktops let you host multiple operating systems and multiple applications locally and in remote locations.  This is reported to offer much greater efficiency than traditional computer systems.

You can get more information at http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/

If you have questions before or after the meeting you can email Kent Marshall in Lincoln at:

TV antennas getting congressional attention

Oct 6, 2008 1:32 PM

Last week Senator. Bernard Sanders, an independent from Vermont, said the FCC has failed to warn over-the-air TV viewers that they may need new antennas to get DTV reception and that the commission has inaccurately downplayed the likelihood of the necessary modifications to those antennas.

The senator asked the FCC to begin an education campaign alerting over-the-air households of the possible need for a sensitive rooftop antenna. He also said the federal government should consider subsidies for antenna replacement.

Sanders cited the study by Centris, a consulting firm, which said the FCC had underestimated the homes that would need antennas to receive over-the-air signals. He also cited a study of the digital transition in Britain that said that 35 percent of consumers would need to buy new antennas.

“Americans should not be forced to pay for cable, satellite or other telecommunications video services to get their free broadcast channels,” Sanders wrote in a letter to the FCC, “because the government did not properly plan for this transition.”

Sanders, who is from Vermont, noted it was dangerous for viewers to install outside antennas in very cold weather. He envisioned the risk to senior citizens trying to climb onto the roof in the Vermont winter.
