MINUTES

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Chapter 74 met on Wednesday November 12, 2008 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Information Technology Services.

There were ten (10) members and four (4) guests present.

Chairperson Gina Dierks called the meeting to order at 12:45 pmcst,

Gina talked about the upcoming meeting dates and locations: January date and location is being planned.  February meeting is with Martin Conroy, location to be planned.

Reports:

Secretary’ Report:  Secretary Darrel Sudduth gave a quick reading of the August, September and October minutes.  A motion was made, seconded and with a vote meeting minutes were approved.

Treasurer’ Report:  Treasurer Pat Caffrey reported there is $xx,xx in treasury with $xx,xx interest as only activity.

New Business:

Nomination committee: Jim Skinner, George Blessing, Jr., and Darrel Sudduth will nominate officers for the year 2009.

Bob Eastwood of the Nebraska Emergency Management office stated that the 2009 EAS manuals were mailed out.

Pat Caffrey stated that December 4, 2008 will be a test for the DTV conversion.

Kevin Faris talked about the White Space issue the FCC has approved.

Bill Beck made a motion to adjourn, Jim Leedham seconded and with a vote meeting was adjourned at 1:18 pmcst.

Kent Marshal of High Plains Technology presented a very interesting and informative session about Vmware Virtualization that lets one computer do the job of multiple computers, thus saving money, time and information.

After Kent Marshal’s presentation, Andrew Buker, UNO Systems Administrator and George Blessing, Jr. talked about the Virtualization of computers at UNO.  After their presentation, George Blessing, Jr. took all on a tour of the UNO Information Technology Center.

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Chapter 74 met on Wednesday October 8, 2008 at the Omaha Westside Church 15050 West Dodge Rd.

There were fourteen (14) members and three (3) guests present

There was no business conducted.

Larry Bloomfield of Taste of NAB Road Show presented a very interesting and informative demonstration of various electronic gear.

Each year Larry and an assistant tour the United States with new and cutting edge electronic gear and equipment for the Broadcast Industry.

The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Chapter 74 met on Wednesday September 10, 2008 at the Omaha Public Power District’s North Omaha Power Station.

There were ten (10) members and three (3) guests present

Chairperson Gina Dierks called the meeting to order at 12:23 pmcdt.

Rick Klatts, Dave Russel, and Pat Caffrey talked about the Nebraska Broadcasters Association booth at the Nebraska State Fair.  Pat had been there on Tuesday answering questions and hearing comments about the upcoming transition of analog to high definition television.  Rick and Dave had been there on Friday.  Many of the questions were “When are you going to broadcast HDTV and how to connect the converter boxes.  It appears that many citizens are still confused about the transition.

Gina called for reports:

Secretary’s Report:  Secretary Darrel Sudduth read an overview of the July minutes.  Dale Scherbring made a motion; Jim Leedham made a second to approve.  With a vote of the majority, the July meeting minutes were accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:  Treasurer Pat Caffrey gave a report of  xxxxx.xx.  Only activity was $x.xx interest.

Chairperson Gina Dierks told of the upcoming events: the tour of KRVN facilities on September 20, Iowa Public Television symposium in Des Moines, Iowa October 7, 8,  & 9, Taste of NAB with Larry Bloomfield on October 10.

November meeting will be at the University of Nebraska Omaha with presentation by High Plains Technology.

After the meeting Greg Krieser of Omaha Public Power District gave a very informative Power Point presentation covering the generation of electrical power.  Greg also covered some of the history of the OPPD.  After the presentation, Darrell Bender and Randy Lambert took everyone on an informative tour of the facilities.
